# From/To

This chapter describes the various options of the **From/To** tab of the Settings dialog.

The **From/To** tab is for setting up the From/To feature of PlantExpressTools. It calculates From and To values for PipeLineSegments, PipeLineGroups, SignalLineSegments, and SignalLineGroups. Details can be found under [Update From/To](/plant-tools/plantexpresstools/how-to-use/update-fromto.md).

### <mark style="color:blue;">Properties for Pipe Line Segments/Signal Line Segments</mark>

Lists all properties which are used to store the From/To info in the PipeLineSegments/SignalLineSegments.

Lists all properties which are used to store the From/To info in the PipeLineGroups/SignalLineGroups

### <mark style="color:blue;">Others</mark>

#### <mark style="color:blue;">Include Signal Line Groups/Signal Line Segments in the update of From/To values</mark>

By default only PipeLineGroups and PipeLineSegments will be considered by the From/To function. Enable the check box if you want to include also SignalLineGroups and SignalLineSegments.

### <mark style="color:blue;">Dialog Preferences</mark>

#### <mark style="color:blue;">Show 'Pending Tasks for From/To properties' dialog</mark>

When opening a drawing for which there are pending From/To tasks a dialog will appear. The dialog can be suppressed and the selected option in the dialog will be stored under **Default is 'Open now'**.

### <mark style="color:blue;">Composition of the From/To values</mark>

Defines what the From/To value contains when a line ends at a component or at a nozzle of an equipment. For each connection type you select the content and a separator.

With the default settings the segments get the same values as in earlier versions. The groups now get the same value as their segments. Earlier versions wrote only the Tag of the connected line into the group when the line ended at a component.

#### <mark style="color:blue;">Pipe / component connection</mark>

Used when the line is connected to another line through a component, for example a tee, valve, reducer or instrument. Select what the value contains:

* **Both tags combined** (default): Tag of the connected line, separator and Tag of the component, e.g. 100-P-1002 - V-101.
* **Only the line tag**: Tag of the connected line, e.g. 100-P-1002.
* **Only the component tag**: Tag of the component, e.g. V-101.

Remark: With **Only the line tag** the value stays empty when the component sits at the end of the line and no other line is connected behind it.

#### <mark style="color:blue;">Pipe / equipment connection</mark>

Used when the line is connected to a nozzle of an equipment. Select what the value contains:

* **Both tags combined** (default): Tag of the equipment, separator and Tag of the nozzle, e.g. T-101-N-1.
* **Only the equipment tag**: Tag of the equipment, e.g. T-101.
* **Only the nozzle tag**: Tag of the nozzle, e.g. N-1.

Remark: **Only the nozzle tag** can be ambiguous when the same nozzle Tag is used on several equipment, e.g. N-1 on several vessels.

#### <mark style="color:blue;">Separator</mark>

Each connection type has its own **Separator**. It is placed between the two Tags and is only used with **Both tags combined**. If one of the two Tags is empty, the value contains only the other Tag without separator. Blanks are kept, so a separator can also be a single blank.

* Pipe / component connection: default " - " (blank, hyphen, blank).
* Pipe / equipment connection: default "-" (hyphen without blanks).

#### <mark style="color:blue;">Applying a changed setting</mark>

A changed setting does not change existing From/To values. Run **Update From/To in drawing** again in each drawing to write the values with the new setting. If **Update on drawing save** is enabled for the From/To Update on the [On Drawing Save](/plant-tools/plantexpresstools/settings/on-drawing-save.md) tab, this also happens when you save the drawing.

There is no command that rewrites the From/To values of the whole project. **Update remaining From/To tasks** only resolves the pending tasks of lines connected to other drawings by off-page connectors, see [Remaining Tasks](/plant-tools/plantexpresstools/how-to-use/update-fromto/remaining-tasks.md).
